Cooking 101 and Beyond with Salted is a sponsored post through Pollen-8 Network.  All opinions are my own.  Also, links are part of their affiliate system.

Cooking is one of those basic life skills I believe everyone needs. Years ago, girls learning the skill alongside their mom or other women in their life. Sometimes guys learned basics as well. After all, we all need to eat and most of the time food is so much better freshly made at home.

Sadly, not all of us learned all that we’d like to know.  Also, I want my own boys to be well versed in the kitchen so they can go beyond super simple basics and enjoy food as adults. Thankfully, there are now online options like Salted which help you learn skills from beginner cook to beyond. Cooking 101 here we come!

Cooking 101: What Salted Provides

Salted is basically a video driven online cooking school that comes into your house via the internet. You’ll need a decent connection to stream the videos, but otherwise it is quite accessible. Plus, it is really an affordable option at only $9.99 per month.

Salted Learn What's Cooking

This program is really a Cooking 101 experience and they even have a course titled How to Cook Bootcamp which combines a variety of video instruction. Some of the classes are specific by cuisine especially for those who love Asian Fusion, Indian, Italian, Mexican and Vegetarian dishes.

While most of the classes have a focus on creating specific dishes, there are also a few classes that are more about technique.  These are important things like butchering meat and knife skills. They also dive into specific foods like beef and potatoes.

Using Salted is easy to do.  Once logged into your account, you can click on courses to find what you want to learn.  Select the course and you’ll be taken to an overview page that includes a short video highlighting everything you can expect to be taught in the class. IA tab for course instructors gives you information about the chefs doing the video instruction. f you click on launch class, you will begin at the first tutorial in the line up. Each one has the video as well as written instructions (e.g. recipes used in the video.) After watching all the videos there is the option to take a quiz to check that you’ve learned all of the key points.

Cooking 101: Our Experience So Far

The child who is MOST into cooking has been away at a special culinary arts program. So, the experience for this review is from me at the time.  However, I know that we’ll be adding some time with the Salted website into our homeschool days.

I decided to pop around looking at my options to start.  While I feel like I have many basic skills, there is always something new to learn. Some things like making a grilled cheese sandwich seem like a no brainer.  You put the cheese between butter bread slices & cook on both sides, right?  At least that’s they way I learned at home.

Well, after watching the course, I discovered that you need to consider the bread used (none of that ‘bunny’ bread) and match it to the cheese you are using.  And, the chef teaching recommended a blend of unsalted butter and mayonnaise to keep things from burning.

Grilled Ham and Cheese Made After Watching the Salted Class

I won’t share some of the other tips, but will say that this one course goes on to show how to make a cheese crusted sandwich and some specialty sandwiches like a grilled s’more melt.

The class I was really anxious to dig into is the Introduction to Culinary Herbs and Spices.  One skill I struggle with is finding just the right blend of seasoning for my dishes to pop. So, I came into this class with the expectation that I would learn more about herbs and spices so that I would improve my cooking from scratch skills overall.  It starts off talking about what are essential spices and which ones are best fresh versus dry.

Don’t wait to get busy creating wonderful dishes in your home. With an assortment of holiday themed classes, there’s no time like the present to  order a subscription to Salted and up your game in the kitchen.
